This may seem trivial to some, but as a pet owner and animal lover myself, I can understand that this little bit of good news amid all the devastation can make all the difference in the world to the people caught up in the hurricane disaster.

Got some information from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). There is no doubt that many family pets were killed or abandoned because of the disaster, but many groups are actively engaged in animal rescue. You may remember the AP story about the little boy who's puppy, "Snowball" was prevented from getting on the bus to Houston. According to the ASPCA, "Snowball" was saved and they are trying to reunite him with his family.

Oh, so glad to hear about Snowball, because that story just broke my heart, thinking of the little boy crying so hard he threw up. I hope they can find his family soon.

It'll be tough to find the family, but there is a reward fund, can you believe it? The story captivated the country (and quite possibly a few others!)

So -- what's your status?

I have three cats and I always used to worry about what would happen if a tornado came through our area and they weren't in the house with me, so although the human life is important, to people who have pets, those pets are really important to them too. I'm glad to see someone is considering the needs of these beloved animals.

You bet - I have a cockatiel and keep a carrier and extra food ready for him should I ever need it. Though an earthquake rather than an evacuation (unless it's for a tsunami!) is far more likely for me, given my location.

Lots of groups are helping out both lost pets and the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium. The zoo implemented their Cat 5 hurricane disaster plan, and it worked like a charm, they didn't run out of food for anyone (including the people) and had enough fuel to run their freezers etc. The aquarium, however was hit hard because as anyone who's had a goldfish bowl go bad knows, these things require a lot of constant maintenance and power to operate.

Which makes me wonder that if the zoo managed to prepare and implement a plan, why so many others were caught completely unprepared. But I digress :)

Excellent wonder. There's a lot of wonder to go around I think...
