Vicki departs at the close of The Myth Makers.

Vicki is one of those companions I really don't have much to say about. She doesn't appear on my top ten (or top twenty) companion lists; but I don't dislike her, either. I guess the best thing I can say is that she did her job well, at least as well as the writers allowed her to.

It seemed from the first that Vicki was a Susan substitute -- both in the demographic she filled and the way the Doctor latched onto her. As Susan 2.0, she worked reasonably well. Her chemistry with William Hartnell was spot-on, and she brought out the best in both the actor and the character. Where Vicki distinguished herself from Susan was in Vicki's ability to shamelessly manipulate the Doctor. And that's something I applaud. The Doctor needs to be manipulated a bit, just to keep him grounded. At almost every juncture, Vicki has the Doctor (and any other number of male characters) wrapped around her little finger.

I consider Vicki's finest moment to be in The Space Museum where she manipulates a computer into committing suicide. Perhaps the Doctor took lessons, there -- as talking enemies into killing themselves is a trick he excels at in his later years.

Vicki's worst moment? I'd have to go with part 6 of The Chase: stalked by walking mushrooms and inexplicably freezing into a catatonic state when faced with scaling down from a height.

So - Vicki fans - what do you find appealing? Discuss!

Holy hiatus, Batman! It's been a long while since I've added anything to my Old Skool Tour.

I am still dutifully viewing vintage Who, in fact I'm in the middle of The Dalek's Masterplan. Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] stellastars Classic Who Rewatch, I went back to see when I had last posted my Tour... and ouch! It was January. I can only say that the last few months have been insane for me -- between nagging health problems, work insanity that reached a fever pitch, long (great) vacation and other things... well anyway. Haven't kept up with much lately.

Regardless, the last tour guide was The Time Meddler.

Next up is Season Two Retrospective )

Coming Soon: Galaxy 4
rangersyl: (Old Skool TARDIS)
No, I haven't lost sight of my goal to watch Who in order! I was only so busy I couldn't sit down and put thoughts to, er, keyboard. The Old Skool Tour continues:

The Time Meddler

Are you quite mad? You know as well as I do the golden rule about space and time traveling. Never never interfere with the course of history )
rangersyl: (Ian and Barbara)
I haven't forgotten the Old Skool Tour, life has just been crazy. In fact, I'm actually up to Galaxy 4 but behind on the reviews.

It was your instincts and intuition against my logic, and you succeeded. )

The Romans

aka Musings of a John Lucarotti Fangirl

What's the matter? Is my slip showing? )
rangersyl: (Doctor Susan)
No, I haven't forgotten about the Old Skool Tour - I've just been extremely busy. I'm posting my Susan retrospective, and when I get back from vacation, will continue on with The Rescue.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be wanderers in the Fourth Dimension? To be exiles? Susan and I are cut off from our own planet, without friends or protection. But one day, we shall get back. Yes, one day. )

Any more Susan theories? Susan Fic recs?

The Dalek Invasion of Earth

The Daleks are the Masters of the Earth )

Random question: I can't place David's accent. Any Brits around who can help me? Or am I just hearing things?
rangersyl: (bathroom sink)
Planet Of Giants

Can you hear us? Put us through to police! )

With the completion of The Reign of Terror, Doctor Who's first season comes to an end and my, wasn't it magnificent?

I liked to imagine coming home on a Saturday evening in 1963 and settling in for twenty-five minutes of mind-blowing television. Would it be frightening like An Unearthly Child or The Daleks? A romping good adventure like The Keys of Marinus? Total immersion into another place and time like The Aztecs or Marco Polo? Or mind-bending science fiction like The Sensorites and The Edge of Destruction? You didn't know! And that was the thrill of it. The only guarantee is that it would be like nothing you'd ever seen before.

Next up: The Planet of Giants
rangersyl: (Doctor Susan)
The Reign of Terror

Can someone explain to me why the Reign of Terror is the Doctor's favorite human historical period? I'm having serious doubts about that man.

The events will happen, just as they are written. I'm afraid so. And we can't stem the tide. But at least we can stop being carried away with the flood. )
rangersyl: (Ian and Barbara)
The Aztecs

Barbara - One last appeal. What you are trying to do is utterly impossible. I know, believe me. I know! )

If you haven't seen any First Doctor, this is the one to watch.

ETA: Possible spoilers for The Fires of Pompeii may lurk in the comments.
rangersyl: (Ms Wright plus two)
The Keys of Marinus

Ice? Impossible in this temperature. Besides, it's too warm. )

More Barbara awesomeness, yo!
